Writing Camp
“There were no writing retreats scheduled at Rowe, so I decided to put one together myself.”
As I mentioned in a previous post, I recently spent a week writing in my friend, Elizabeth’s cabin in the Catskills. It was delightful and useful, but was also a little crazy-making. I can only take the company of my demons for so long. Also, I wanted someone else to be feeding me. I’ll do it again, for sure, though I’d prepare better. I forgot my slippers, for instance, which meant my feet were cold the whole time. Next time I’ll bring slippers.
It got me thinking about other places I’d want to write. Dream retreats. The first place I thought of was Rowe Camp & Conference Center, in Rowe, Massachusetts, where I’ve been going since I was a teenager. I always feel more creative there, and there’s a whole infrastructure in place to feed me. There are loads of places to write: rustic cabins, communal halls, flat rocks in the woods. It’s nestled on the side of a mountain in the Berkshires, so the views are pretty spectacular, and the air smells like pine trees.
There were no writing retreats scheduled at Rowe, so I decided to put one together myself. Which is maybe crazy, but I think it could be fun.
The programming will be loose. We meet for meals, have some group workshop time in the afternoon, dance every night. Other than that, we’re off somewhere writing.
Since it’s my retreat, there will always be coffee available. Also tea, because I respect tea drinkers.
It’ll be in October, from the 11th to the 14th — a long weekend — with the option of extending a couple of days, if you want.
I’m limiting it to thirty people for now, since it’s a practice run. If it goes well, I’ll do it again.
The registration fee is $200. Paid subscribers to this Substack will get a $50 discount on that using a code previously disclosed (contact me if you’re a paid subscriber and you don’t know the code).
